About the ACE Subcommittee

girl in treeThe ACE subcommittee is dedicated to working with local businesses, schools, philanthropic organizations, local governments and institutions to increase access to a healthy built environment and encouraging people to be more physically active. Some of the activities ACE has sponsored in the past two years include:

  • Establish multi-modal transportation guidelines, policies and a government position to make sure these policies are used in all new road development, as well as retrofitting existing roadways
  • Supporting and collaborating with other like-mind organizations, such as Safe Roads Coalition, Trails 2000, CDOT, Green Builders Association, and developers to use Smart Growth and Complete Streets infrastructure for all new growth in La Plata County
  • Educate city and county staff and elected officials on Smart Growth and Complete Streets policies and guidelines
  • Writing and implementing Safe Routes to School infrastructure and non-infrastructure grants in collaboration with Durango Public Schools, the City of Durango, Safe Roads Coalition, and Trails 2000 for years ’08-’11
  • Publishing the Assessment of Roads in La Plata County for the Safe Roads Coalition and distributed to all city and county staff and elected officials (’07)
  • Organizing the Tour de Farms bicycle tour of local farms and gardens in collaboration with HLLP’s Healthy Local Foods committee (annual fall event). You can watch a video from the 2008 Tour de Farms.
  • Organize and present the first “Durango Bike Summit” to present League of American Bicyclists “Bicycle Friendly Community” designation of silver for Durango and educate participants on importance of including bikes in the design of all roadways (May ’08)
  • Collaborate with the City of Durango Parks and Recreation Dept to add improvements to the Animas River Trail and Dalla Mountain Park trails

  • Mixed land use (residential/retail/industrial/open space)
  • Take advantage of compact building design
  • Create a range of housing opportunities and choices (market value/low-income apartments, condos & town homes)
  • Create walkable and bikeable neighborhoods
  • Foster distinctive, attractive communities with a strong sense of place
  • Preserve open space, farmland, natural beauty, and critical environmental areas
  • Strengthen and direct development towards existing communities
  • Provide a variety of transportation choices
  • Make development decisions predictable, fair and cost effective
  • Encourage community and stakeholder collaboration in development decisions
