ACE subcommittee is currently working on

Active Community Environment

Mission: To promote Durango and La Plata County becoming an Active Community Environment by improving biking/walking access to all roads, influencing future growth by educating elected officials and city/county staff about Smart Growth, increasing physical activity for all citizens through education and programming, and collaborating with other organizations working on Safe Routes to School grant implementation.

Meeting Mintues for ACE as of 2/26/08

Stategies:

Make land use planning and development policy recommendations based on Smart Growth Principles and Complete Streets principles to BOCC and City Counselor’s as well as city/county planner’s and staff
Promote community participation in creating pedestrian and bicycle friendly environments
Educate community members about need and benefits of ACE/Smart Growth and promote active forms of transportation
Collaborate with other local organizations working to promote active lifestyles and Smart Growth principles

The ACE committee is currently working on these and other projects:

Collaboration with Safe Roads Coalition, Trails 2000 and the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic to write and implement a Safe Routes to School grant
Present Smart Growth/Complete Streets principles to elected officials and city/county staff
Partnering with the Healthy Local Foods committee to present the Tour de Farms bicycle garden tour of Durango on 9/22/07
Sponsoring a portion of the Safe Roads Coalition Coordinator’s salary for the year
Sponsoring the printing of the county roads assessment prepared by the Safe Roads Coalition to present to city/county elected officials & staff
Prepare and sponsor printing of Complete Streets brochure

Participation in annual “Bike to Work Day” celebration, 6/27/07 in downtown Durango
