Strategies:
- Educate the community about the benefits of making healthy food choices (by outreach through schools, worksites, restaurants and grocery stores, physician offices and agencies/locations which serve low-income residents).
- In collaboration with Sustainability Alliance of Southwest CO (SASCO) and local government elected officials and staff (BOCC and City Counsel, City/County Planner’s/Engineer’s) recommend policies to lawmaker’s that facilitate and support the growing, selling and distribution of local, healthy, affordable and culturally appropriate food.
- Expand and support local food distribution networks and facilities such as; food banks, community gardens, worksite Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) buying groups, farmer’s markets, Farm to School programs, etc.
The Healthy Local Foods subcommittee has several projects it is working on:
- Sponsorship of the local documentary “Heart & Soil” which was shown at the Smiley Auditorium on Sunday, 8/26 at 6:30pm more information can be found at heartandsoilfilm.com.
- Sponsorship of the Electronic Balance Transfer machine for Food Stamp recipients at the Durango Farmer’s Market
- Organization of the first annual “Tour de Farms” bicycle tour – riding through the city of Durango to visit 6 local community gardens. The Tour took place Saturday, 9/22 from 8:30am until 1:30pm. Please contact Jeanine at 749-5630 or jjustice@sucap.org for more information
- Partnering with 6 local restaurants to launch the state campaign “Smart Meal Seal” that promotes healthy food choices in restaurants
- Presenting the “Festival of Color” at 2 local grocery stores this fall to highlight healthy and local foods sold in the grocery stores
- Ongoing collaboration with Farm to School program including the sponsorship of the Farm to School logo and advertisement in the Durango Public Schools ’07-’08 lunch calendar
- Continuing collaboration with many other organizations such as Sustainability Alliance of Southwest CO (SASCO), the Environmental Center at Fort Lewis College, Promoviendo La Salud, Southwest Gardens Project, and the Durango Farmer’s Market to increase availability, distribution and consumption of healthy, local foods
